The mobilized reservists have played a vital role in Operations Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom because extra military forces are needed on land, on the sea and in the air. Naval Coastal Warfare (NCW) Detachment, Souda Bay, Crete, Greece.NCW consists of two units that have been activated to the Marathi Naval Pier Complex Souda Bay, Crete. The Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit (MIUWU) 202 and Inshore Boat Unit (IBU) 21 are the units and their mission is to keep ships and submarines protected from potential danger while entering and exiting the waterways of Souda Bay. Inshore Boat Unit 21 is the seafaring counterpart to MIUWU-202. Unlike the land-based MIUW unit, IBU-21 patrols from the water. The unit consists of patrol boats and crewmembers who rotate on around-the-clock watches for waterside security. They provide security for U.S. Navy sea-going vessels in and out of Souda Bay and are also responsible for clearing tugs and NATO ships.
