The United States Air Force's 122d Fighter Wing is an Air National Guard fighter unit located at Fort Wayne International Airport in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Home of the Blacksnakes, serving the Fort Wayne community since 1946, the 122nd Fighter Wing traces its heritage back to the 358th Fighter Group "Orange Tails." Flying P-47D "Thunderbolts," the 358 FG flew interdiction and bomber escort missions during WWII. In May of 1946, the group was redesignated as the 122nd Fighter Group (later to become 122 FW) and assigned with all honors and colors to the Indiana Air National Guard, established at Baer Field, adjacent to the Fort Wayne International Airport.
This coin was initially donated to the Maine Troop Greeters in 2004. On 13 October 2014, the unit again was deployed to the Middle East and LTC Ted Spier (then MAJ Spier) stopped by to look up the coin he had donated earlier. He was able to provide the additional information about the coin that we had lacked earlier.
