The 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB) is a unique organization consisting of a battalion headquarters, two transportation companies, a Direct Support maintenance company, a Chemical company, finance detachment, explosive ordinance detachment, Public Affairs detachment, the 9th Army Band, and a Parachute Rigger company. The battalion was split-stationed over 350 miles between Fort Richardson, Alaska and Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
The battalion is faced with many unique challenges. Soldiers must be especially tough to serve here, as they may train in -40 degree Alaskan weather and deploy to 90 degree South Pacific Islands to fulfill real-world support missions. Recent deployments for the 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB) include but have been not limited to Iraq, Afghanistan, Pompeii, Bangladesh, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Nepal, Kwajalein Atoll, Valdez, Seward and Annette Islands.
