The 1st Brigade Combat Team was deployed to Kuwait in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and became a part of a joint task force with the 1st Marine Division to carry out offensive operations in the Topeka area of operations. In addition to combat operations, the brigade formed and trained the 60th Iraqi National Guard Brigade. The brigade returned to Fort Riley on September 2004. In 2006, the brigade received a mission change and began restructuring in order to better train military transition teams for their deployments. Approximately 2000 soldiers from the brigade were deployed in the fall of 2006 as Security Force companies.
During the winter of 2018-2019, the 1st Brigade assumed the mission of providing a regular rotation of forces to Europe in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve.
