Following the events of September 11, 2001, the buildup of forces in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM illuminated the immediate need for construction support at many locations in the CENTCOM's Area Of Responsibility. The immediate response of two Red Horse Squadrons (the 823rd RHS, followed by the 820th RHS) to meet those construction requirements necessitated the formation of a headquarters unit to coordinate Red Horse construction efforts and provide theater-wide logistics support. The 1st Expeditionary Red Horse Group was stood up as that headquarters unit in October 2001, and began directing construction effort at various locations throughout the CENTCOM's Area Of Responsibility.
