LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- On any given Sunday, a select group of Airmen help facilitate every basic military training and technical school chapel service at Lackland. What makes those Airmen different are the white ropes on their shoulder which signify their participation in the white rope program, open only to Department of Defense technical training students who volunteer their one day off to assist with Sunday services and religious education.
The Lackland chapel program supports 40 worship services and religious education programs each Sunday with the assistance of the white ropes. About 6,000 attend religious services every week. It takes a minimum of 80 white ropes to handle the services, though the number in the program can run as high as 120. Duties include ushering, collecting and counting the offering, directing traffic, escorting the attendees, and cleaning the facilities. The white ropes handle what needs to be done in connection with the service and to support the chapel program.
