The mission of the 553rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, the "Leopards," is to provide reinforcing sustainment support and direct support to units at Fort Hood, Texas in support of III Corps initiatives and directives in order to ensure the Battalion's ability to respond to all sustainment operations

After the events of 11 September 2001, the Battalion deployed elements in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The unit was reorganized and redesignated on 1 October 2006 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 553rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. This was as part of the transformation of the US Army to the modular force structure. The Battalion, previously part of the 64th Corps Support Group, was realigned under the 4th Sustainment Brigade.
