On March 1st, 1992 the unit was expanded and redesignated as 228th Support Battalion (Forward), 28th Infantry Division (MECH).On December 9th, 1948 the unit was organized and Federally recognized at Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, for the Korean War. In 2005, the battalion participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom IV
