Narrative
Round shaped, antique brass colored coin 2 inches in diameter.
SIDE 1 - On a brass-colored field, the 31st Infantry Regimental insignia with the words, "31ST U.S. INFANTRY" along the top edge and, "POLOR BEARS" along the bottom edge surrounded by a dark blue band with brass edges containing the unit's principal deployment locations.
SIDE 2 - On a brass-colored field, the 10th Mountain Division insignia on the left, with the notation, "Fort Drum, April 1996," the 31st Infantry Regimental coat of arms on the right with the notation, "Manilla, July 1916" and an engraving location below; all surrounded by the wide dark blue band with brass borders and the words, "4th BATTALION 31st INFANTRY" top, and, PRESENTED FOR EXCELLENCE" at the bottom.
The 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, was reactivated at Ft Sill, OK to support the Field Artillery School and the 6th Battalion was reactivated at Ft Irwin, CA, serving there until its inactivation in 1988. In 1995, the 4th Battalion was inactivated at Ft Sill and reactivated as part of the 10th Mountain Division at Ft Drum, New York the following April. It is now the regiment's only remaining battalion. The blending of "Polar Bears" with the "Division of Mountaineers" in New York's cold north country is a fitting match in which another generation of American soldiers uphold our proud motto "Pro Patria" (for country).
