NMCB 17 "Desert Battalion"
The mission of NMCB-17 is to provide and maintain a trained, ready, and immediately available Naval Construction Battalion, meeting the requirements of the Naval Construction Force for employment as may be directed by the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) in the event of war, national emergency, or when otherwise authorized by law.
NMCB-17 is a Battalion of the 1st Naval Construction Regiment, within the 3rd Naval Construction Brigade. The 3rd Naval Construction Brigade Seabees consist of both Active and Reserve units, serving as an integral part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Active and Reserve Seabee units were integrated into a unified organization in the fall of 1993, dropping any "Reserve" designations. The re-organized NMCB 17 moved their headquarters to their current location at Fort Carson, Colorado, on February 1, 1995. Presently made up of ten Detachments over six western states.
