The brigade deployed in December 1990 to participate in Operation Desert Shield. As the right flank of the 1st AD wedge, and often times operating independently, the brigade fought four major battles against Iraqi forces during the ground campaign of Operation Desert Storm.

In Dec1991, the brigade colors relocated to Mannheim, Germany as part of the USAREUR force realignment. In Sep 1994, the 3rd Brigade colors were transferred to Fort Lewis, Washington and assigned to I Corps. In Mar 1995, the brigade was deactivated but activated again in Feb 1996 at Fort Riley as 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Div.

In Feb 2003, the 3rd Bde deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and under the control of the 3rd Infantry Div., was the first 1st AD BCT to close on Baghdad. The brigade redeployed to Fort Riley in Apr 2004 but was redeployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from Jan 2005 through Feb 2006. The brigade underwent a remissioning in 2006, transforming into a training entity and training deploying Military Training Teams (MiTTs) from across the Army. In April 2007, the brigade was converted to the Army's newest modular Heavy Brigade Combat Team concept.
