In the Global War on Terrorism, the 3rd Battalion 4th Marines was first deployed to Kuwait in January 2003 and went on to participate in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. They were the first US Marine unit to enter Baghdad. They went on to further Iraqi deployments in March 2004, January 2005, September 2006 and early 2008. They were the first US military unit to reach 5 straight Iraqi deployments and returned from their last one in September 2008. This was followed by deployments to Afghanistan in October 2009, April 2011 and the spring of 2013.
