Chaplain Pickens provides the following information about the coin design:

- The front depicts the Chaplain Corps side of the coin.

- The motto "Pro Deo et Patria" translates to "For God and Country."

- The units at the top represents units he served in as an enlisted troop; the ones at the bottom, his service as Chaplain.

- On the opposite side in the outer circle - Faith, Hope and Love in Body Mind and Spirit - depict the values he strives to instill in his daily ministry.

-The Bible references to the right and left of the Celtic Cross refer to his two favorite verses.

-The letters "KEA" below the cross represent the three other members of his family: Wife-Kelly and Daughters-Emily and Abigail.
