Task Force Bearcats in 2003-2004 was organized around the 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry Regiment, a National Guard Unit from Minnesota.

The name bearcat is taken from the sigil on the 136th Infantry Regiment's insignia. A bearcat is neither a bear nor a cat but is instead a carniverous mongoose-like mammal from Southeast Asia. It is an aggressive animal which is awkward on the ground but very agile in trees where it walks along the branches at night foraging for fruit and small animals.
