SIDE 1 - A round brass-colored disk with a bevel cut edge; at the center, a Texas map in state flag colors with the head of a bald eagle mounted on the white upper right portion; to the left of the map, the 36th Infantry Division ("The Texas Division") patch; to the right, the Army National Guard patch; above, the Texas Army National guard patch; below, the inscription, "FOR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE"; along the top edge of the disk, the inscription, TEXAS ARMY NATIONAL GUARD."
SIDE 2 - A round brass-colored disk with a bevel cut edge; at center, a Command Sergeant Major insignia of rank, surrounded clockwise from left, the inscriptions, "LOYALTY, DUTY, HONOR, RESPECT, INTEGRITY", and SELFLESS SERVICE, PERSONAL COURAGE"; below the insignia, the inscription, "LONE STAR" and along the top edge of the disk, the inscription, "STATE COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR.:
The Texas Army National Guard has its roots in the Texas Militia formed by Sam Houston during the Texas Revolution of 1835 - 1836. The Texas Army National Guard is composed of approximately 19,000 soldiers, and maintains 117 armories in 102 communities. State duties include disaster relief, emergency preparedness, security assistance to state law enforcement agencies, and some aspects of border security. The Governor can activate the National Guard components under his control for state active duty in Texas, and in support of adjacent states.
