The 10th Cavalry Regiment was originally formed as a segregated African-American unit and was one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" regiments which served in combat during the Indian Wars of the western United States and the Spanish-American War. The 10th Cavalry was deactivated in 1944 and reactivated as an integrated combat unit in 1958. Portions of the regiment served in conflicts ranging from the Vietnam War to the current Iraq War.

The 1st Squadron- 10th Cavalry Regiment of 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, operated out of Forward Operating base Kalsu, located in Iskanderyah, Iraq as of Jan 1, 2006. The unit's mission was to train Iraqi Security Forces to conduct operations independent of coalition assistance.

The 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry has since been deactiated.
