The coin was ordered by the Washington State Patrol Troopers Association in remembrance of Trooper Tony Vian Radulescu, who was shot and killed on 23 February 2012 in Gorst, Washington while making a routine traffic stop. The shooter was a convicted felon who fled the scene and later committed suicide when the police attempted to apprehend him. Trooper Radulescu was a US Army Veteran and had served with the Washinton State Police for 16 years.
On 23 February 2016, the Washington Department of Transportation renamed a section of Washington State Route 16 in the Tacoma area in his memory.
