The United States Secret Service was founded in1865 to combat the then widespread counterfeiting of U.S. currency and, until 2003 was part of the Department of the Treasury. In 2003, as part of a U.S. government reorganization, the Secret Service was transferred to the newly formed Department of Homeland Security. Its modern mission is two-fold; protection of the President, Vice President and others, and investigations into crimes against the financial infrastructure of the United States.
