The City of Bangor, Maine has the distinction of being the first city in the United States to adopt military training in its public school system. Bangor High School's Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps is a direct outgrowth of the establishment of military drill during the Civil War. In 1972, the Bangor School Committee changed the status of ROTC at Bangor High School from mandatory to a 3-year elective course. To date, the JROTC Ram Battalion at Bangor High School continues to flourish. In a recent letter to the Bangor Daily News, a local resident wrote,
"Recently, for the fifth time since school started (Fall 2022), I have had the pleasure of watching the Bangor High School Jr. ROTC in action. In September, they organized the remembrance event for 9/11. Last Veterans' Day they were a major part of the Veterans Day Parade as organizers and participants. Dec 7th, they again, took command of the Pearl Harbor remembrance event. Shortly after that they provided the toys for tots with a truckload of toys for that program. The most recent event was in remembering the U.S.S. Maine. * * * The young men and women of the Bangor Jr. ROTC and their leaders should be applauded for their good work."
