Hero's Highway.
News Release by Chief Master Sgt. Vince Lapichino, 332nd Expeditionary Medical Group:
"9/19/2011 - JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq -- As the mission at Joint Base Balad, Iraq, comes to an end so do many of the things we have grown accustomed to seeing. One of these things is Hero's Highway. The name Hero's Highway was the brainchild of Capt. Scott Miller, Master Sgt. Brian Briggs and Staff Sgt. William Murphy. They came up with the name in June 2006 and the signs were made and installed June 27, 2006. A large US flag was installed forming a canopy leading to the local Field Hospital as a greeting to wounded warriors and a reminder that they were in the care of American medics. The first flag for Hero's Highway was put up Nov. 28 2006 by Maj. Richard Hayes. His mother, secured the flag that was donated by Tom Pitts of Park City, Utah, and sent it to Joint Base Balad, Iraq.- - - - - - - This flag is now in the Aeromedical Staging Facility at Andrews Air Force Base, Md."
