3rd Brigade - 49th Armored Division

As a result of the attacks of September 11, 2001, about 550 volunteer guardsmen, mostly from the 3rd Brigade, 49th Armored Division, were called up statewide in Texas. The troops were to be spread over 26 airports in Texas for a duration of about six months, or until the setting up in place of permanent federal security.

On 18 July 2004, the Division was reflagged as the 36th Infantry Division
